5 Cabinet Upgrade Ideas

Outdated cabinets? Try these inexpensive DIY ideas.

Outdated cabinets can be a real eyesore in your home. Whether you are selling your home or not, your kitchen is a big gathering spot as well as a big selling point for your home. Having outdated cabinets could turn off potential buyers or just make your home look older than it really is. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to maximize your resale value and appeal. In fact, there are five ways you can update your home’s cabinets without breaking $100.

1. Hardware swap

Outdated hardware, such as pulls and knobs, can date your cabinets more than you know. You can update your cabinet’s hardware in just one day for under $100. Of course, there are some cabinet pulls and knobs that cost upwards of $30 a piece, but there are also varieties for under $2 each. To save time and hassle with patching and painting, replace two-hole pulls with two-hole hardware. Another inexpensive idea is to remove your current hardware and spray paint it. There are great metallic spray paints on the market that mimic bronze, copper or silver.

2. Add paint

Are your cabinets an outdated wood type or simply the wrong color? Instead of replacing them, buy a cabinet painting kit and get to work. For a large kitchen, you could still redo your cabinets for less than $100. While it will take a lot of work sanding, priming and painting, it can pay off. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform the look of your kitchen. If you don’t want to take on such a large project, consider stenciling. A tasteful stencil, and a steady hand, can add pattern and color to the cabinet fronts.

3. Add molding

Flat kitchen cabinets can be transformed with molding. Add small molding borders around the doors or even add bead board to the front transform their smooth appearance. If you can, order molding that matches the original construction of your home and paint the cabinets and molding in the same paint color so that it does not look as though they were added on after the fact.

4. Use glass

Swap out the cabinet front with glass instead. This will make your kitchen feel more open and modern. Decorative glass also gives your kitchen a customized look. But, not all cabinets can handle the glass change-out. Check the back of your cabinet doors to see if the insert can be removed. To keep costs down, choose just a few cabinets to reface with glass and fill them with decorative objects or glassware.

5. Add lighting

Sometimes you don’t have to change your cabinets at all — all you have to do it change the lighting. Add peel-and-stick LED light pucks under your cabinets to illuminate the kitchen or swap out old light fixtures. Old light or bad lighting can highlight your outdated features and changing that lighting can make your kitchen feel more modern.
